We help Birmingham-based SMEs and growing companies solve operational problems, plan finances and build strategies that actually work. No jargon. No fluff.
Book a free consultation See our servicesWe started Vanguard Biz Consulting in 2018 because too many small businesses in the West Midlands were paying for advice they couldn't use. Thick reports gathering dust on shelves. Recommendations that ignored cash flow realities. We decided to do things differently.
Our team of five consultants brings backgrounds in finance, operations management and commercial strategy. Two of us ran manufacturing firms before switching to advisory work; one spent twelve years in retail supply chain logistics. That hands-on experience shapes every recommendation we give.
We work with companies turning over between £500k and £20m annually. Most of our clients are in manufacturing, professional services, construction or wholesale distribution. We take on roughly 30 active engagements at any time so we can give each one proper attention.
Our office sits in central Birmingham, close to New Street station. Clients across the Midlands can reach us within an hour, and we regularly visit sites in Solihull, Wolverhampton, Coventry and Walsall.
Six core service areas, each tailored to the size and sector of your business.
We build 12-month and 3-year financial models using your actual data. Cash flow projections, break-even analysis and scenario planning help you make investment decisions with confidence rather than guesswork.
Entering a new market segment or launching a second location? We research competitors, size the opportunity and map out a phased plan with clear milestones. Most growth projects run 8 to 16 weeks.
We audit your workflows, identify bottlenecks and redesign processes. Clients in manufacturing and logistics have seen lead times drop by 15 to 30 percent after implementing our recommendations.
One-on-one coaching for founders and senior managers. Sessions run fortnightly over six months, focusing on delegation, decision-making under pressure and team accountability structures.
When costs outpace revenue, we step in to restructure departments, renegotiate supplier contracts and reallocate budgets. We have guided seven companies through turnaround programmes since 2020.
Thinking about exporting or pivoting into a new sector? We deliver competitor mapping, regulatory overviews and pricing benchmarks so you enter with clear data rather than assumptions.
Four reasons businesses across the Midlands keep coming back.
We stay involved during execution. After delivering recommendations, we join weekly check-ins for up to three months to make sure changes stick. You get a named consultant who knows your numbers.
Birmingham has its own business ecosystem: the Jewellery Quarter creative cluster, the Tyseley industrial corridor, the Digbeth tech scene. We understand local supply chains, council grant programmes and regional funding bodies like WMCA.
We quote fixed fees for defined scopes. A typical financial planning engagement costs between £3,500 and £8,000 depending on company size. No hourly surprises, no scope creep charges without written agreement first.
You won't be passed to a junior analyst after the sales meeting. The consultant who presents the proposal is the one who does the work. Our smallest engagement still gets a director-level lead.
From first call to measurable results, here is the typical path.
A 30-minute call where we learn about your business, current challenges and goals. No charge, no obligation.
We spend one to two days on-site reviewing financials, speaking with key staff and mapping processes.
You receive a clear action plan with priorities ranked by impact and effort. We present it in person and answer every question.
Weekly check-ins over 8 to 12 weeks. We track KPIs, troubleshoot issues and adjust the plan as real-world data comes in.
Real feedback from businesses we have worked with in the past two years.
"They rebuilt our cash flow model in three weeks and identified £42,000 in annual savings we had completely overlooked. The fixed-fee structure meant no budget surprises."
"We were stuck at £2m turnover for four years. Vanguard helped us restructure our sales pipeline and pricing. We hit £3.1m within eighteen months."
"The operational audit was thorough. They spent two full days on our warehouse floor before making any suggestions. The changes cut our order processing time by a fifth."
Quick answers to the things people ask us most often.
Most projects run between 6 and 16 weeks. A focused financial review might wrap up in six weeks, while a full operational improvement programme with implementation support usually takes three to four months. We agree the timeline before any work starts.
Our sweet spot is companies with at least one year of trading history and annual revenue above £500k. Startups at the idea stage are usually better served by incubator programmes. If you have launched and are generating revenue but need help scaling, we can almost certainly help.
The initial 30-minute call is a two-way conversation. We ask about your business model, revenue, team size and the specific problem you want to solve. You ask us anything about our approach, fees or past experience. If there is a fit, we send a written proposal within five working days.
We prefer at least one on-site visit during the diagnostic phase because it reveals things that spreadsheets cannot. After that, most of the work can happen remotely via video calls and shared documents. Clients outside the Midlands region can be served entirely online if needed.
We agree on two to four measurable KPIs at the start of every engagement. These might be gross margin improvement, cash conversion cycle reduction, revenue growth or employee retention rate. We track them monthly and include the numbers in our final report so you can see exactly what changed.
Send us a message or call directly. We respond within one business day.
Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. If you call outside these times, leave a voicemail and we will return your call the next morning.
